Description
This film was designed to be an informative, entertaining how-to for Australian millennials, teaching them how to be a bit better at telling the difference between llamas and alpacas.
In the film two alpacas, disguised as a llama, attempt to get into the 'Club Llama', an exclusive nightclub that only llamas can attend. They have a conversation with the bouncer, who seems a little suspicious, and provide him with a fake 'llama ID'. After he lets them in, the bouncer has a dream sequence in which he sees his llama sensei who reminds him of his training in knowing the difference between llamas and alpacas, running him through each of the key differences. As he does, the bouncer has flashbacks to different aspects of his conversation with the alpacas. He realises he has been tricked, turfing the alpacas out just as they thought they had managed to get in.
Execution
The production techniques were craft-heavy, using traditional frame-by-frame 2D animation, combined with hand-generated illustrations and textures. The design approach leaned heavily on sketchy linear elements combined with strong, exaggerated silhouettes, painterly strokes and rim-lighting, coming together in a tactile, expressive drawing/painting style.
The film walks the line between a certain comic-book grittiness, with a big does of cinematic parody. To achieve this, we had to create the right atmosphere for the piece, which was essentially a neo-noir approach to the colour palette and layout. The look leaned heavily on dark planes of colour interspersed with neon blues and magentas, inspired by images of Tokyo's urban nightlife in the vein of photographer Liam Wong.
The most enjoyable challenge was developing the characters - we really wanted to create a unique stylised look, that not only felt recognisable as Llamas and Alpacas, but that also carried the humorous performances in the film.
