Overview

Background

Austria is a small country in the middle of Europe and lacks direct access to any ocean. While the oceans are drowning in plastic, Austrians are still completely unaware that they are playing any part in the plastic-pollution and destruction of sea life.

For the International Plastic Bag Free Day the environmental organization

Global 2000 wanted to make Austrians aware of the huge problem that concerns us all: our oceans are filling up with Plastic at dramatic speed and Austrians are also playing a big part.

Targets:

1) Raising awareness among Austrians for the problem of polluted oceans.

2) Establishing the national NGO Global2000 which usually focuses on national environmental issues as an expert in the international fight for clean oceans.

Idea

Austria is a small country in the middle of Europe and lacks direct access to any ocean. It also is one of the cleanest countries in the world. While the oceans are drowning in plastic, 85% of Austrians are still completely unaware that they are playing any part in the plastic-pollution and destruction of sea life.

With our Outdoor-campaign we wanted to illustrate the fact that our oceans are in danger of overflowing with plastic – by showing an ocean’s surface made entirely out of plastic. A huge wave of plastic that endangers us all.

The chosen perspective is that of a person close to drowning.

The typography was handcrafted and reflects the movement of the sea in order to enhance the feeling of almost drowning in plastic.

Strategy

Target audience:

1) Austrians, regardless of age or gender. Also Austrians who are not yet very environmentally conscious or informed.

2) Reporters and politicians should be made aware that the NGO Global2000 is fighting for clean oceans and an expert in that field

With a small media budget we chose classical billboard locations across Austria with a special focus on sites where pedestrians could walk by close to the billboards, thereby experiencing the dramatic effect of almost drowning in a real-life-sized ocean of plastic.

Execution

Billboards with the strong visualization of a real-life-sized ocean of plastic where put up in selected sites, where pedestrians could walk by closely, thereby experiencing the dramatic effects of ocean pollution.

Timeline: June & July 2018

Outcome

With a tiny media budget a lot of awareness for the problem of plastic polluting the oceans was achieved in the tiny landlocked country of Austria.

Global2000 was mentioned dozens of times in the media and is now a regular guest on panels, on TV, in newspapers on the topic of how to reduce plastic waste contaminating the oceans.
