Description
“Portraits” opens on a bird’s-eye view of the desert floor with five figures exiting a black sedan in the midst of an otherwise barren landscape. A thumping reinterpretation of a Nina Simone classic, “Feeling Good,” plays in the background as the figures walk away from the vehicle, slowly merging with several, then dozens, then seemingly hundreds of other people. As the spot progresses, the overhead view is intercut with eye-level shots of the crowd, a diverse cast featuring over 100 actors of all hues, shapes, and sizes wearing American Eagle Outfitters denim. From above, we see the crowd gather into formation—spontaneously arranging themselves into the face of a beautiful girl and her gap-toothed smile. A voiceover reads, “22 fits, 81 washes, 84 sizes: we fit the world in all its perfect imperfections,” as the campaign title, “I’MPERFECT” appears onscreen. The actors are then seen rapidly breaking formation to remake themselves into the American Eagle logo.
