Description
Experiences include a water wall, the California redwoods, and a flowing river, among others. The water wall, based on actual fluid dynamics, creates a sensation of pure energy as the water “cascades” over the elevator bays. The California redwoods, shot at scale, give onlookers the sense of peering through the forest as ferns sway gently in the breeze. All experiences have a sound design to further immerse the viewer, as well as Easter egg surprises to keep the audience engaged.
Execution
(1) Real-time physics engines were created to perfect the natural movement of water. This produced such realistic-looking water that it even fooled many people on social media, who believed it was a waste of water. In fact, no water was used in the creation of the piece.
(2) The actual speed of the water wall imagery had to be slowed down to be both soothing and believable.
(3) For the massive render, a render farm was used, with more than 70 servers running for three weeks to complete the project.
Outcome
When people walk off the street and into the lobby to simply snap a photo, the pixelscape has met its objective: to create a “wow” factor for the Salesforce brand beyond B2B. With numerous video uploads, many articles on local and regional blogs, hundreds of hashtags, and millions of views, the pixelscape is social media sensation.
