Description

We transformed car radios into a media to alert driver’s that they were close to schools and should pay twice as much attention to kids crossing the streets.

To do that, we’ve developed a new device capable of interfering in the signal of São Paulo’s main radio stations to broadcast a warning message from students. Any car within 1km of the selected schools would get a special message through the radio. Instead of the regular radio programming, the drivers would hear a lullaby sung by students alerting them that they were driving near schools and should be even more careful.

Execution

We created a device that combines a short-range FM antenna and an audio player. We composed a lullaby and recorded real students singing. We’ve installed the device in the top 10 schools with the highest accident rates in São Paulo.

We programmed the devices to be activated only during school start and end times.

Once installed, the device will stay on until the schools decide to shut it off.

Any car driving near the schools during the start and end times, will hear the lullaby with the message warning driver to pay attention to kids crossing the streets.

Outcome

In partnership with Sao Paulo’s main radio stations, we were able to broadcast our message to the most popular frequencies, impacting listeners from the most heard stations on the dial combined.

Schools from all over the country have shown interest in implementing the new device.

Many publications have featured the campaign.

The effort sparked off online debates about road safety and responsible driving.
