The director did a deep dive into the original film and spoke with the original crew whenever possible to learn their approach and methods. He was given a good deal of latitude to shape the script and story. All creative choices were made to honor the film while updating it to today, from the costume and production design to cinematography to choosing to make Kim a successful single mother and Timothée a millennial in the gig economy. He worked to synthesize the two vastly different acting styles of the leads in a way that created a fluid and safe environment to take chances. Early on, it was decided not to be as candy coated and outsized with stylistic choices -- the colors are more muted, the acting isn’t as pushed and stylized. One of the questions we constantly asked ourselves was, did we overcorrect? Hopefully we didn’t.
