Background

Instances of domestic violence and the murder of women continue to increase in Quebec. In order to protect women, and raise general awareness, the Government of Quebec released a video that sheds light on a lesser-known, but just as serious, form of violence: psychological violence related to control. The Government’s goal was to get Quebecers to realize that this form of violence exists, and that women have the power to get out of those situations. This was the first domestic violence awareness campaign that does not portray physical violence

Execution

The film begins with a young woman taking a selfie in a park. We then see the same woman taking several selfies, in a variety of different places. After a few selfies, we notice that the woman is smiling less and less for each of her pictures. At the end, we find out that she is taking pictures of herself because her partner is asking her to prove to him where she is. She is a victim of domestic violence.

Outcome

The video received over 12 million impressions, and had a real influence on society. After the video aired, anti-domestic violence organizations reported a 92% increase in calls, and the murder rate of women significantly decreased. The video’s most important impact, however, is that it helps save the lives of women, day after day.
