Description
To produce something truly unique for the brand it was important to set a clear brief on the mens and womens fashion collection inspirations and goals of the film, but let Baker take the reins and have him explore an idea that he himself would be proud of as a short film. His initial thoughts upon looking at the collections were of “Slab City”, an alternative campsite in the Sonoran Desert near San Diego. The majority of supporting roles were played by real-life residents of Slab City, capturing real people in their own surroundings. Costumes for all characters came from the KENZO SS16 Collections. The result was a film that captured a hybrid between not only fiction, but a documentary of sorts, looking at these nomadic people living off the grid - whilst still managing to tell the story behind the collection and reflecting the core values of the brand.
Execution
Snowbird was first shown at a VIP screening event in LA on the 2nd of February 2016, with the film going live globally on www.kenzo.com and all KENZO Social Media Channels (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) on the following day. Between 10th-23rd February Snowbird was screened before all films playing at MK2 Cinemas in France. Throughout this 2 weeks of broadcasts, across 11 cinemas and 64 screens, the film ran a total of 5,000 times. In addition to this the film was shown on screens at JFK and Charles de Gaulle airports. The print advert was displayed in Paris’ “Colonnes Morris” network, with KENZO being one of the first fashion brands to have this opportunity, as well as bus stops and bus wraps. The print advert also appeared in a variety of global magazines including Vogue, Elle, W, GQ, and Harper's Bazaar.
Outcome
Snowbird gained significant press coverage including a feature in The New York Times Style section and articles in Vogue’s US, French and Italian online platforms, i-D.vice.com, DazedDigital and WMagazine.com. The video has currently 50,000 views and counting on Youtube. Snowbird is also making the short film festival circuit most recently being shown at Aspen’s “Shortsfest” in April 2016.
