Background
The spot is designed to get the whole nation talking. There’s no bigger debate in sport than what is our national sport? Everyone has an opinion and this commercial taps into that.
The refresh for TAB (the brand) is a fun homage to our passionate, sport-obsessed nation. Even though it’s light-hearted, the debate is real. We are finding many Aussies take the question of national sport, very seriously.
Execution
In order to articulate the breadth of sports required with limited screen time and resources, the director introduced the top down sequence, solving the challenge in a creative way that added visual intrigue whilst still keeping a narrative arc across the whole film. He set another sequence in a desert void, as an original, metaphorical depiction of how the debate about sport rages across the entirety of Australia. These decisions allowed for more screen time to be spent on storytelling, characters and drama whilst still conveying the diversity of sports required.
The challenge was to weave together multiple narratives happening at the same time, while still building emotion.
