OVERVIEW

Description

Is he behind bars, or is it just an illusion? The Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, charged with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Darfur, should have been brought to the International Criminal Court already. Yet, he continues to govern, and the international community is turning a blind eye. This film brings the paradox of this unacceptable situation to life, pointing the finger at the impotence of the international justice system. Al Bashir seems to be behind the bars of a prison, but in reality he’s standing behind the trees used to hang civilians during a raid. Al Bashir seems to be suffering behind the bars of a prison cell, but in reality he is hunched behind microphones, preparing to stir up the crowd with hateful words. Al Bashir seems to be locked up behind bars, whereas in reality, he’s standing behind a troop of riflemen as they prepare to perform an execution. He seems to be accompanied by prison guards, or are they his bodyguards? A friendly handshake during an official reception awaits him at the end of this nightmarish journey. Is justice no more than a question of perspective?
