Description

Kanazawa High School Sumo Wrestling Tournament is the oldest amateur sports tournament in Japan, with its history of over 100 years.

2017 was the year of its 101st tournament.

To mark its start for the next 100 years and to convey the fun of sumo to young generations who think sumo is old-fashioned and uncool, we created “Sumo Girls”.

Based on the thinking that “people enjoy sports more when they know the rules,” we demonstrated 82 wrestling techniques called 82 té.

Execution

We created 2 prints for newspaper "Hokkoku Shimbun", owned media of client, and online film.

By using high school girls in the demonstrations, we revamped the current masculine and violent image and appealed to the audience with cool visuals.

We reproduced the color gradation based on "Ukiyo-e",Japanese traditional art style, by using high school girls-like vivid colors.

In addition, we took the tone balance of old pictures as reference in order not to denigrate the dignity of the traditional sports.

Outcome

This idea attracted much attention around the world, and the images spread immediately to more than 250 web media shortly after release. Furthermore, the story was featured on 7 TV programs and appeared on a number of other media. Furthermore, since the print and video illustrate the beauty and accuracy of sumo’s techniques to a high extent, it also became an unprecedentedly valuable material to learn sumo’s techniques.
