Every four minutes, someone on supervision is sent to prison because of a technical violation of a parole or probation term. Known as the “probation trap,” this phenomenon has ripped families and communities apart for decades. “Reform Alliance” deals with human cost of this unnecessarily punitive practice.
This could happen to anyone. From casting to cinematography to the creeping sounds of handcuffs and visuals of prison bars, moments of day-to-day life under the law are presented naturally and efficiently, haunting because of their seeming normalcy.
To center the voices of the people affected, the director felt a moral obligation to hear the experience of every single person cast. Everyone hired on this film had either been on probation before or had a family member who had. The result is an intimate, deeply compassionate film that helps viewers understand the impact of the problem and the need for action.
