Background
How do you create an agency Christmas card for a year most people would rather forget? We designed a plate to commemorate 2020. An awful plate for an awful year. Then, we invited people to smash it. This mailer was sent to 20 clients and suppliers. Others pulverised the plate digitally, via our Instagram stories. After smashing away 2020, people were left feeling utterly enthused that 2021 is going to be better. Much better.
The budget was approx £800
Idea
How do you create an agency Christmas card for a year most people would rather forget? We designed a plate to commemorate 2020. An awful plate for an awful year. Then, we invited people to smash it. This mailer was sent to 20 clients and suppliers. Others pulverised the plate digitally, via our Instagram stories. After smashing away 2020, people were left feeling utterly enthused that 2021 is going to be better. Much better.
As this was our 'Christmas card' we shown that as an agency we think beyond the traditional and do things differently.
Execution
The central element was the plate itself. We created an illustration that brought to life the most awful bits of the year, then had it printed on a bone China plate. We made sure the illustration was itself awful: dark, bleak, politicians with bat bodies, Dominic Cummings riding on Boris’ back, we created something that people would want to smash., We kept everything else simple and understated: a black box with black velvet lining. To create intrigue on the front of the box, so that people would want to open it, we created a ‘2020’ logo designed to represent a smashed plate and foil embossed it on the front. Finally, we added a 300gsm card insert to explain the idea and wish our clients a Merry Christmas. The plate was sent to 20 clients.
Outcome
As this was our 'Christmas card' we shown that as an agency we think beyond the traditional and do things differently. We received great feedback from all the clients and suppliers, several who actually sent in films of them smashing it!
