Background
Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) in Tasmania, Australia, is one of the world’s most notoriously controversial art galleries, exhibiting art that can be confronting and uncomfortable.
They’re proudly ‘not for everyone’. We decided to demonstrate ‘not being for everyone’ with a visceral challenge for viewers, just as the museum challenges visitors.
Execution
The film opens on an eye, peeping through a hole to the right of the screen. We see a contraption with a countdown gauge and a long needle at the end slowly start to move from the left, toward the eye. The music becomes more eerie and runs faster, as the needle continues its inevitable path. There is no escape.
To see how it ends, viewers had to sit and squirm through a full two minutes as the playhead tracked left to right, with none of the usual ‘don’t skip this ad!’ tricks.
