Description

Development of “Seem”, a world's first personal at-home semen testing kit.

Sperm quality is one of the most important biological data for men that may even affect their life plan. Seem enables men to accurately measure their sperm (concentration and motility) and visualize it on one's own smartphone.

With Seem, they do not have to overcome the high psychological hurdle of visiting a clinic, as they can check one's sperm quality easily and accurately at home. This way, Seem provides them with a reason to participate in infertility treatment.

At present, Seem is the only available device that enables accurate visualization of sperm concentration and motility at the privacy of one's home.

Seem's measurement accuracy is approved by infertility treatment specialists.

Execution

Seem was developed based on nearly 200 clinical trials conducted under the supervision of infertility treatment specialists. Seem's microscopic lens captures the image of sperms that are too small to see with the naked eye, and outputs it as a video image, which will be automatically analyzed by a pre-installed program on a smartphone to display the data of sperm concentration and motility.

In order to communicate Seem’s user benefit, i.e. reduction in the duration, cost, and stress of infertility treatment achieved by men's early participation, we uploaded a documentary movie showing the stories of multiple couples.

At product launch, we assigned Amazon and a major electronics retailer’s e-commerce site as the main sales outlets, to allow the target an easy access. We also encouraged local governments and municipalities threatened by declining population and birthrate to utilize Seem and strengthen their financial support to male infertility treatment.

Outcome

Men are shown to be highly receptive to Seem, with a purchase intention at 71%. Seem became a top-selling product in Amazon’s healthcare category.

Prompted by the test results of Seem, one in three (33%) men who used Seem overcame their reluctance to "be tested at a clinic" and thereafter visited one.

Seem played a role in triggering vigorous discussions on early male participation in TTC, and against this background we successfully removed the society’s fixed perception that “infertility treatment is solely for women”, and made it today’s new common theme that men should also proactively participate in TTC and infertility treatment.

Furthermore, several municipalities (Yokosuka-city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Saitama Prefecture etc.), threatened by declining population and birthrate, have begun providing financial support to male infertility treatment.
