Background

As a B2B2C company, Mastercard’s business can only grow if our partners’ business grows. When we looked at the Slovenian hospitality industry, we realized that the lack of accessibility features in bars, restaurants and public events was preventing an entire group of people from visiting and consuming in these locations on a regular basis.

At the same time, as a brand, Mastercard is aligned to the UN sustainability goals, with a history of creating work aimed towards social and financial inclusion across all markets it operates in. In this case, Mastercard Slovenia wanted to enable people with permanent and temporary disabilities to have a normal socializing experience in the Slovenian hospitality industry.

Idea

When it comes to making locations accessible, most people believe that installing a ramp is enough. But true accessibility is about much more than that. In fact, one of the things that is supposed to bring people together when coming to these locations – the table – can sometimes keep people apart because of its design.

That’s how The Inclusive Table was born, a modular, custom-made object, designed with inclusive principles, with features that accommodate different special needs

We exhibited the table at the Mastercard Pop-Up Holiday Village, the biggest Christmas food fairs in Slovenia, where we invited our business partners, key opinion leaders and the media.

The table became the vehicle through which we launched a conversation around accessibility in bars and restaurants, by turning the design of the table into a blueprint which we sent out to 1200 business owners and invited

Strategy

In the case of this campaign, we had a double audience.

First, there were the 1200 hospitality industry business owners and public officials which were targeted by our campaign and ultimately received The Inclusive Table blueprint.

Second, there was the consumer audience – the people living a with permanent or temporary disability whom Mastercard wanted to enable to have a better experience when going out.

To create the table, Mastercard worked with AMAIS, an NGO that aims to build a more inclusive society through architecture, design and technology. First, we collected insights from the community of people living with disabilities related to their experience when going out. Next, we addressed these insights through the design features of the table. After gathering feedback when exhibiting the table at Slovenia’s largest Christmas food fair, we improved its design and created the blueprint that was sent out to the hospitality

Execution

To create the table, Mastercard worked with AMAIS, an NGO that aims to build a more inclusive society through architecture, design and technology. We went through all the stages of design prototyping, from validating the problem to gathering insights from the community of people living with temporary and permanent disabilities and addressing those insights through the design features of the table.

The table was exhibited at the largest Slovenian Christmas food fair, where we invited both our audiences. On one hand, we wanted ot launch the conversation around accessibility in bars, restaurants and public events. On another, we invited NGOs and people living with disabilities to join us, use the story sharing function and give feedback on how to improve the design.

Next, AMAIS created a blueprint of The Inclusive Table’s design, with modular elements, so that the hospitality industry owners could customize it according to their space.
