Background
In 2018, pollution problems forced local governments to apply severe traffic restrictions. Spain's main city centres became inaccessible to most vehicles.
With the launch of the new Smart EQ, the sensible thing to do would have been to show the benefits of an electric car, but since it was Smart, we decided to do something more emotional and show drivers doing what they longed for most: saying goodbye to having to pay for parking their cars, to refuelling and to driving restrictions.
And who better for this mission than two people who have a true love for a Smart: Paula Echevarría and Paco León, the two well-known Spanish actors and influencers who featured in the campaign.
Execution
After such a long-lasting relationship, we knew it was going to be an intimate farewell, charged with feelings and emotions. Which is why we decided that the soundtrack for our campaign could only be a tango.
So, we created a musical composition from scratch, inspired by the essence of traditional Argentinian tangos, and to which we added our own special touch with Dany Dorf, a renowned tango singer and composer from Buenos Aires.
For the choreography, we worked with a professional tango dancer who along with a choreographer designed each tango movement and step to fit our memorable story.
The song’s lyrics are an ode to the new-found freedom of Smart drivers, but also a farewell message. The words are full of irony and references to the benefits of electric mobility, where nostalgia for what we leave behind is mingled with the excitement of what is yet to come.
