In a film without dialogue, the music leads the storytelling, and becomes the dialogue.

Before the film was finished, the composer started creating the music, with a main theme, and several side themes. This gave him flexibility so he could later adapt the music to the final length of the film. They wanted romantic strings as a change in the end of the film. From that, the composer got the idea of plucked strings in the beginning, as a strong contrast to that. The elevator music was also composed and mixed. All strings were eventually recorded live and put into the final version.
