Description

Glade believes life’s most beautiful moments should never be forgotten. So we set out on a mission to learn how the power of fragrance can spark memories. Especially, for those who need it most – the millions of families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The Memories Project by Glade. We launched groundbreaking research and developed a multi-sensorial experience that used our scents to help families reconnect with their most cherished memories. We partnered with the University of Florida to investigate how scent could trigger memories in people suffering from Alzheimer’s. Because so many of the emotional experiences people have are in the context of smell, we worked to better understand link between scent and memory so people with Alzheimer’s could live a fuller, more emotionally rich life.

Execution

The Memories Project used our portfolio of Glade fragrances to celebrate life’s most beautiful moments. We asked family members to collect photos, souvenirs, music to help spark a memory for a loved one. We held a workshop to create multi-sensorial Memory Boxes.

We matched each memory with a Glade scent. A mass social campaign asked people to share their family’s most valuable memories.

How-to social posts invited people to create scented Memory Boxes.  We released a documentary film that told the story of how one daughter used scent to spark memories for her mother. Our ecommerce site reached over 3.5 million people. The Memories Project by Glade funded the University of Florida Center for Smell and Taste research to investigate how scent affects memory retrieval in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Glade believes in the power of fragrance to keep millions of memories alive with scent.

Outcome

The emotional campaign gained millions of views across Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Our influencer, Janel Parrish, whose grandfather has Alzheimer’s, reached out to her 5.2 million followers to raise awareness for this disease. She invited her followers to engage with our documentary film and e-commerce site to order personalized Glade Memory Candles. Instagram followers chimed in with their support. The Memories Project by Glade funded the University of Florida Center for Smell and Taste research to investigate how scent affects memory retrieval in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Overall, this project garnered 15 million impressions plus hundreds of thousands of likes and shares across platforms to raise awareness of the connection between memory and scent.
