OVERVIEW

Description

NET is the largest cable TV operator in Latin America who offers broadband and fixed telephone services.

In addition to telecommunications services, NET contributes actively in Education, Culture and Citizenship related projects.

This institutional film brings a new version of the story of "The Ugly Duckling" of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, in order to show how supporting new generations can transform the world.

he film was developed as animated short film in 3D and presents a different ending, in which the protagonist does not turn into a beautiful swan, but is successful among other characters thanks to all what he learned in life.

Execution

THE NEW UGLY DUCKLING combines mixed live action technique, animal puppets, 3D animation.

The puppets built in carved styrofoam were manually covered with cloth fibers. Only trunk and head with their corresponding ocular bases were built, since the facial expressions of the iris/peaks/mouths/wings/arms/legs were modeled and 3D animated.

We've shot for seven days and each scene was registered in parallel with two additional cameras to be able to put that information to the tracking software, so we could match the limbs modeled in 3D with the bodies that had been shot in live action.

We've built a special set of grips to manipulate the puppets, taking into account their movements for each shot in particular. So we design our own grips which were then erased and rotoscoped in post-production.

After matching/tracking each of the approved shots, we began to animate the facial expressions/movements of the limbs.

Besides, we've also designed and built a movable set in which the props could easily change places ad hoc for each shot. Over a set of tables, we overlapped the pieces that formed the lagoon of ducks and the more than 300 props that had been built: trees, plants, rocks and architectural buildings/among others.
