Execution

The Wall Project was created to raise awareness for the Wende Museum and Archive of the Cold War in Culver City, California, by taking advantage of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The centrepiece was an 80-ft. stylised wall that was placed across Wilshire Boulevard, closing down the busiest thoroughfare in L.A. and symbolically dividing the city into East and West. A second wall comprised of ten sections of the original Berlin Wall went up along Wilshire Boulevard. A website and Facebook page were launched to communicate museum-sponsored events leading up to the anniversary. Interviews with prominent artists and public forums increased awareness. A ceremony attended by over a thousand people held on the night of the 20th anniversary culminated with the Wall Across Wilshire being torn down. They were joined by audiences throughout Germany who watched it live on TV.

Outcome

The project was announced at a Los Angeles City sponsored press conference attended by international and local press. In the weeks leading up to the event and following it, the Wende Museum and Wall Project were featured in over 600 articles in Germany and was covered in more than 20 countries worldwide. The Wall Street Journal said this- “Judging from its brief history, the museum promises to be a major asset to that new institutional category, “Sites of Conscience,” which has creatively expanded the museum field in recent years.”
