Tokyo Shakkei: Borrowed Scenery Tokyo Tower, a photograph collection published by Hakuhodo + Design Project, a project team within Hakuhodo, exploring new design possibilities.

The photographs in this book feature Tokyo Tower, a symbol of Tokyo, as the borrowed scenery. Borrowed scenery is a traditional Japanese landscaping technique with which natural sceneries, eg., mountains, outside the garden are incorporated in the garden design to create a dynamic landscape. In short, with this book, we redesigned the relationships between Tokyo’s residents and the borrowed sceneries of Tokyo Tower featured in the collection.

The book is shaped like Tokyo Tower. Our objective was to have the tall, triangular page format convey Tokyo Tower’s appeal for a dramatic impact.
