Background

Every hour, decisions are made on important issues. Globally, only 24.3% of the people making these crucial rulings are women.

The recent Global Gender Gap Report shows it will take 108 years to achieve gender equality. We can’t wait that long.

We have to act now to inspire the next generation of young women. We have to help them find their hero. We need to help them “see it to be it”. And we need to do this in a way that’s accessible and entertaining for them.

To show girls there is a far wider range of careers open to them than they see in their immediate social media sphere. Girls only need one woman like them, one woman they admire, one woman who inspires them, to believe they too can follow their dreams.

To inspire 1,000,000 girls around the world to find their calling and

Idea

60 women. 60 stories. 60 minutes.

This idea helps young women find 1/60 role models who will help them develop their innate talent.

By women out there, just like them.

Who inspire them to follow their dreams and ambition.

A global idea that accelerates future female leadership and inspire the next generation of young women.

With a strong focus on equality, encouraging young women to have a voice.

Despite progress in recent years, all over the world women are facing obstacles.

This idea contains advice every single minute to advise girls how to turn their obstacle, into their advantage.

A jam-packed 60 minutes, with 60 women to choose from.

Because one size does not fit all.

And demonstrate that you only need to find one hero to inspire you to change your life.

1 woman who makes you feel, “If she can do it, so can I”.

#ShesMyHero. Find yours.

Strategy

To create a positive hour to counteract what happens every day, every hour. An hour that would create a legacy. A socially powered movement to empower 1 million girls to find their one Hero.

World Woman Hour is targeted at girls and young women, aged 14-24. This is when girls are becoming women and are influenced by what they see and hear around them. This is a crucial time. Who they are surrounded by (in their daily lives and on social media) and the role models they are exposed to, will shape the women they become.

We wanted to show young women there are female role models just like them. Women who look like them and come from the same places they do. Women who have overcome obstacles that hold girls back - sexism, oppression, racism, disability, poverty, and self-doubt. And show how to make their obstacle, their advantage.

Execution

As a global initiative, we worked with talent from all around the world and overcame the challenges this presented, such as language barriers and different time zones.

On International Girls Day October 11, 2020, we brought them together to tell their stories, in 60 seconds each. We showed girls that their hero is out there and to help them find her.

Broadcast on Facebook Live and introduced by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, we tell the stories of women such as:

Swati Mandela, Peace Activist + Granddaughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela

Dr Jessica Meir, Marine Biologist + Physiologist + Astronaut

Valentina Sampaio, 1st transgender model on cover of Vogue + Sports Illustrated

Dame Jane Goodall, Primatologist + Anthropologist + World Leading Expert on Chimpanzees

Jameela Jamil, Actress + Radio Presenter + Model + Writer + Activist

Sapna Chadha, Director and Head of Marketing @ Google India + SE Asia
