OVERVIEW

Background

Between April 1st and 29th 2022, the equivalent of nearly 1,400 soccer fields of forest were razed in the Amazon. Yet, if the general public is confronted with ever more terrible figures, few know the impact of our consumption on the forests on the other side of the globe. The European Union is in fact the second most responsible for deforestation in the world.

The situation comes at a critical time as the Parliament and member states are currently finalizing their position on deforestation legislation.

For this historic occasion, WWF France wishes to raise awareness and mobilize the French around an ambitious law to stop the destruction of our forests.

The NGO seeks through this campaign to reach a target beyond the usual circles of environmental activists.

Execution

Pitch of the 1st season: 6 episodes

Through Iris's gripping story read by Marc, the listener is immersed in the daily lives of European members of parliament, between political mechanisms and economic stakes, between lobbying and humanitarian urgency. The journalist and the listener become one as they discover together the games of power that are hidden behind the European decisions.

Pitch of the 1st episode:

A phone call in the middle of the night. "Have you read it?" Marc, a disillusioned journalist, receives a diary from a colleague. As he begins to read it, he discovers the story of Iris, a young intern at the European Parliament.

All seem to be working on a law aimed at combating deforestation. However, the law is taking a long time to be implemented and everyone seems to be losing interest in it.

As Iris submits her final work, she discovers sensitive documents.

Outcome

Thanks to entertainment, our campaign was covered by the most important french media and discovered by people who are not aware of the ecological discourse.

During the first month, the podcast reached on all audio platforms, the top 50 most listened podcasts all categories combined.

Since the launch of the campaign, the petition against deforestation of WWF France, has recorded more than 32,000 signatures.

38% of the listeners who started the series finished it.

The brand no longer positions itself as a reporter of scientific studies or analysis but as a storyteller: "Fiction allows us to reach out more widely, better and differently. It's less dry than expert reports." Isabelle Autissier, WWF France

As a result of this campaign, members of parliament voted on Tuesday 13 September 2022, a historical text against imported deforestation. They voted to ban the import of products from deforested land into the European Union.
