Description

We made portraits that revealed their faces by using a unique painting technique. We created a campaign based on the case of the 43 missing students in Mexico. With the help of Steven Spazuk, known as the fire painter, and the symbol of Amnesty International: the candle. We proved the power that each one of us have to continue shedding light on the victims of this great social problem and their families.

Execution

With the help of the 'fire painter' Steven Spazuk and using Amnesty's symbol: the candle, we produced 43 portraits that revealed the faces of the 43 disappeared of Ayotzinapa in Mexico.

The artist’s technique consists of burning the canvas with the flame of a candle and then tracing, marking and painting the shapes without burning them. The canvas is marked with a hollow and he works with this in minute detail using brushes, punches and even bird feathers to apply the details to the work.

This is truly doing something different with light. It is painting for remembrance of the disappeared; creating incredible and unique works of art painted with fire. We helped ensure the disappeared were remembered with light, something that Amnesty International has been doing for many years with their own light.

Outcome

We succeeded in shedding light on a social problem which was being kept in the dark. The campaign had an international impact and put this cause and problem in the news, appearing in media of all kinds from television and radio to press and the Internet.

A video of the action communicated the launch of the campaign through social media and the Internet. The campaign included outdoor and press actions in major cities and a collection of 43 handcrafted portraits exhibited in different cities around the world with the support of Spazuk.
