CampaignDescription
Idea: Phone cases made of car wrecks caused by texting whilst driving.
Research shows that people use their phones while driving. We also know a lot of them have a case to protect their phones from damage. The idea is to turn phone cases into something that not only protects their phones, but also their and others lives. An emotionally charged product that makes you think twice before picking up your phone in traffic.
153 phone cases made out of crumpled metal from car wrecks caused by texting whilst driving. One phone case for each car crash since the implementation of the ban. Every case is unique and numbered, and sold at crashedcases.com. All profits go to Trafikskadefonden, an organization which helps rehabilitate victims of car crashes.
Execution
Handmade and unique phone cases, made in collaboration with the metal artist Lennart Wintermyr from Stockholm, Sweden. The backside of the phone case is made out of crumpled metal from car wrecks. The base is made of rubber and plastic, to be gentle against the phone and keep the signal strength in full force. The inside is covered with a decal that is numbered with 1-153 to show its uniqueness and a copy that describes the idea and the Volkswagen branding. The cases are delivered in a beautiful box, also numbered.
Outcome
The campaign got over 600 clippings in magazines around the world in all types of media from newspapers to magazines as Topgear, Trendhunter, Yanko design, Wired and Fast company. In total the campaign got an earned reach of 357 million with a value of 5 million USD. The campaign reached the front page of Reddit.
95% of the articles mentioned Volkswagen Sweden as an innovative brand taking a stand for car safety. Also, the message to think twice before picking up your phone whilst driving was lifted in all results. Volkswagen received positive coverage in media they often aren´t mentioned in at all and reached new target groups. So good as every media linked to campaign page & published picture and video.
The campaign site got 12.000 unique visitors during the first week. The cases were sold out in 72 hours!
Synopsis
Texting whilst driving is one of the most common driving distractions, and it’s illegal in most parts of the world. This February, Sweden was one of the last countries to ban it. Despite that, the number of distraction-related crashes hasn’t decreased on Swedish roads.
The brief was to create a topical idea that communicates around the ban, and spread awareness about safety in traffic.
The product is finalized and available for consumers.
