CampaignDescription
Reading out loud helps children to learn to read better. Unfortunately, not all kids love to read out loud… Ketnet wanted to do something about that. That’s why Ketnet launched Ketnet Dub, a new tool that makes learning to read fun.
Ketnet Dub is a series of interactive cartoons in which children can become the voice of one of the characters. Here’s how it works: Kids choose a character based on their current reading level. There are 3 different reading levels. The higher their level, the more difficult the words.
During the cartoon, children read out the text of their character. Their voice is recorded and added to the video. Afterwards they can watch their movie again and hear how they’ve done, and share it with teachers, parents or friends.
Execution
Ketnet Dub is an intuitive tool, that makes learning to read fun.
It’s a series of interactive cartoons in which children can become the voice of one of the characters.
Kids choose a character based on their current reading level. The higher their level, the more difficult the words will be.
Automatically, at various points during the cartoon, the audio drops out, signalling the child to read the text displayed at the bottom of the screen. Their voice - recorded using the tablet’s built-in microphone - is added to the film and saved so the child can immediately watch ànd share it.
IedereenLeest (EverybodyReads) helped us determine and implement three different reading levels, based on standard Dutch educational guidelines (AVI). We also collaborated with kids to test the app and give feedback at various stages of the production.
Ketnet Dub was launched at the start of the ‘Youth Book Month’.
Outcome
Ketnet Dub had a great impact since it was launched: in the first few weeks alone, 55,746 children downloaded the app and recorded more than 168,139 videos (i.e. 2 out of 10 Belgian children), 51% of them shared their videos with someone.
The national and international press was very enthusiastic. The idea documentary even landed the evening news on one of the most watched channel in the country and was shown integrally. Immediately, Ketnet Dub became the most popular education app in Belgium.
Teachers, libraries and speech therapists spontaneously promoted the app and now think more of Ketnet as a true learning partner. Best of all, children from all ages shared their love for the app by massively commenting on the children’s platform.
And with more cartoons to be added to the app regularly, Ketnet Dub could certainly become children’s favorite way to read.
Strategy
Ketnet is always watching trends around the world. But the kids - who share their thoughts and leave comments on the Ketnet website - are a greatful source of information, too. This helps Ketnet understand what their target group likes, what frustrates or intrigues them, etc.
Ketnet acknowledges new technologies, and uses them to offer a complete ‘Ketnet experience’, both through linear and digital channels.
This helped Ketnet build a strong and useful app.
The app, targeted at children between six and ten is designed specifically for tablet and mobile, the best medias for reaching today’s children. A generation who now loves to participate actively, when interacting with content. Ketnet Dub allows kids to play a role in an authentic Ketnet adventure. To become the character they love to watch on TV. After enjoying their performance while recording, they can check if they did well and share the video.
Synopsis
It is often said that the world belongs to those who read… Unfortunately, children’s reading skills have gotten worse over the past years. Studies show however, that reading aloud is an effective method to learn to read better.
Ketnet, the Belgian TV channel for kids, has been the “supporter of children” since 1997. The TV network always made a priority of supporting children in the different stages of their lives and trying to educate them in a fun way. They wanted to play a role in something every child has to do, but not always likes to do: learn to read.
That’s why Ketnet wanted to encourage young kids to read more and improve their reading skills in a fun way.
