ClientBriefOrObjective
Last summer in Turkey, Taksim Square, in Istanbul, has been the theatre of weeks of protestation. The square was quickly forbidden to protesters and the police accumulated acts of violence. 8,000 injured people. 5 dead. 5,000 arbitrary arrests.
We had to find a way to protest against police violence, to demand justice and remind the simple right of peaceful demonstration.
Implementation
We launched a website giving everyone a safe place to protest : www.backontaksim.org.
Using Google maps, the website let anyone protest peacefully on Taksim Square by placing themselves on the map. As simply as connecting through Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
Outcome
In spite of the government’s threats against social network users and the hacking of the website twice, backontaksim.org received over 40,000 visits and managed to create a demonstration reaching more than 6,000 protesters. Also, people could sign a petition to the attention of the prime minister. 4,700 signatures have been recorded. The website is still online. The virtual protest too.
Relevancy
Even with police violence and blockage, there is always a way to express ourselves. Google Maps was one of them. The demonstration on Taksim Square continued on the web, with no worries of police violence.
