BEARS CALLING, Berlin / LEAPS BY BAYER / 2018

BriefExplanation
In 90 seconds, the film revives the epic story of the “Lyon 25”, a staircase in Lyon, France, 25 steps high, that pro Skateboarder Ali Boulala tried to leap in 2002. And failed. His attempt inspired 13-year-old skateboarder Aaron “Jaws” Homoki. Over a decade later, in June 2014, during his initial attempt, Jaws snapped his board and tore his MCL. Then, in October 2015, after a long and painful recovery, he did what many thought was impossible: he finally landed it, 13 years later.
The film ends with the question what a similar Leap of faith would look like in science. This is the question that Leaps by Bayer intends to answer.
EntrySummary
Instead of using models or actors, the film uses the two actual skateboarders famous for the original Lyon25 story: Aaron „Jaws“ Homoki and Ali Boulala. The voice-over is from skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Berlin-based techno-icon produced the exclusive background track called Schlœribus.
Solution
The director wanted the film to feel as real as possible even though it was post heavy. He didn't want it to feel like a cold visual-effects piece. He wanted to create striking visual narratives that complement the raw humanity of the performances of the two skateboarders.
He had a cinematic approach and went for a surreal landscape where you would least expect a skateboarder and felt this surreal landscape fitted perfectly to the metaphor Leaps by Bayer wanted to express.
Also showing the human emotion of the two skateboarders was important. It can take years to land a trick and he wanted to portray this struggle through the eyes of these two within 90 seconds.
Being able to find the subtle balance of telling a true genuine human story within the context of a powerful visual journey is what makes the spot unique and appealing.
