Why is this work relevant for Film Craft?
We wanted to shoot digitally without losing the textures. In addition, shooting digitally was important because we knew we needed to have enough footage to work with the actors, have long takes, and improvise to tell the story we wanted to tell.
Working with pinpoint lights also allows you to focus more on the character and the specific scene you are working on.
Please provide any cultural context that would help the Jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work.
Mexico is one of the countries with the largest prison population of women.
65% of women are interned in mixed facilities, where they often suffer various abuses.
Currently, there are around 500 children living with their mothers in prison.
Some mothers are arrested with their children, and are exposed to the decisions made by the arresting officers, who may leave them with relatives, turn them over to authorities, or even leave them on the street.
Children born in prison are locked up at night and share a bed with their mothers.
The minors currently living in prison are constantly in situations of violence. They coexist in overcrowded spaces and in inhumane conditions. Their development within a prison environment can generate behaviors that are repeated in the future.
Many women who gave birth to their children in prison do not go to foster homes to find them once they are released
Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
A group of women assist a mother in smuggling an unusual package into prison. Rather than drugs or weapons, the package contains a candle in the shape of a "3". The women go to great lengths to keep the package hidden and secret, doing whatever they can to help the mother give her son a special moment. When the candle is finally lit, the mother hums "happy birthday" and brings it to her son's cell. This will be the last day the child can spend with his mother, as children must leave the prison at the age of 3.
Background:
SITUATION: Around 500 girls and boys (an estimate by Reinserta) are born and live in
Prison, and can live up to three years with their mothers inside the penitentiary centers, only to be separated from them on their 3th birthday.
BRIEF: To create a fundraising campaign that helps build more care centers for children and their mothers.
OBJECTIVES: Exceed last year's donations to build more "bebetecas" and help more people.
-Because of its cinematographic nature, the piece was made to make people experience what women and children face in prison.
