Cultural / Context information for the jury
Xibalba, the Mayan underworld, is considered the origin of the Day of the Dead (Día de Los Muertos). According to Pre-Hispanic Mexican traditions, our ancestors believed that souls of dead people traveled through the Mayan underworld called Xibalba, where the souls had to face several trials with the help of rituals and altars made by their living families, to achieve eternal rest and meet with their loved ones that also passed away.
Unfortunately, with the passing of the years, the legend of Xibalba was lost in time by the new generations, that are relating the Day of the Dead with skeletons and catrinas, forgetting a whole unique mythology and the origin of the most important tradition in Mexico.
That is why for the Day of the Dead, Cerveza Victoria decided to bring to life one of the most iconic and forgotten places in the Mexican culture.
Tell the jury about the casting process.
Xibalba had a 100% Mexican cast from the peninsula. Due to the distance of some places and the realism that we were looking for in the characters, it was necessary to travel and do the casting in a presential way.
The team traveled to several communities looking for the ideal casting, made by descendants of the Mayan culture.
The voice-over is from one of the most recognized Mayan poets from the world, Jorge Miguel Cocom Pech, who made a stunning work expressing the pain of a father saying goodbye to his dead son.
