Description

To convince people to contact their representatives in Parliament asking for a strong climate change law we developed The Big Ask March: a virtual protest march. On the site users can upload videos, find and email their MPs. Sharing views whilst being part of the biggest collective effort for climate change in the UK so far. Also in the site is an ever-changing film featuring videos submitted by users. It is regularly updated online and in cinemas. Since launch more than 172,000 people have contacted their MPs and 64% of Parliament members signed the petition for a strong law.

Execution

Instead of getting people onto the streets we directed them to our website where they could upload their protest videos and join a virtual march. This enabled them to share their views in an individual way whilst being part of the biggest collective effort for climate change in the UK to date.

After adding their videos, users could also access the site to find and email their Member of Parliament reminding them of the necessity of a strong law. Also on the site we feature an ever-changing film, directed by Sam Brown and Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland). It features videos submitted by users on the site and is regularly updated both online and in cinemas.

Outcome

People from all over the world have joined our march. From politicians like Ken Livingstone to actors like Stephen Fry and Jude Law to activists like Anita Roddick. More than 172,000 people have contacted their MPs (our target was 65,000) and over a thousand videos have been uploaded.
