Background

Emirates Airlines were looking for a new and improved business class seat for their Boeing 777 fleet. The previous design satisfied all the requirements, yet it was felt there was a need to rekindle the aesthetics and upgrade the functionality even further. We wanted to continue their exclusive brand language all the while, and also combine a more contemporary ‘clean line’ of elegance. In addition, the highly complex and detailed ergonomic criteria, such as bed length, seat pitch, large sized video monitor, and maximum privacy still needed to be maintained. As the final leading element, we needed to include luxury Mercedes S Class panache to the overall look and feel.

The Falcon seat cleverly ties all these elements together very successfully, whilst maintaining the design heritage of this leading World Class airline.

Execution

Emirates Airlines have a particular design language that sets them apart from their closer Middle Eastern competitors. Their approach is more classic and cultured, so they choose to utilize materials that reflect the UAE elegance and luxury through the ages, such as, rare woods, polished metals, and exquisite leathers. This was in perfect alignment with our intent to bring the luxuries of a more refined modern day sports car into the business class cabin.

We executed our design with a refresh at the woodgrain, utilizing darker richer tones, surrounded by chrome accents, and included plush diamond stitched leather seats. We wanted the passenger to have the widest longest fully flat bed, with greater accessibility to media components at every position. Extra privacy was achieved with taller consoles and electrically controlled privacy screens. Without compromise in seat geometry or aesthetics, we packaged the largest entertainment screen flying commercially today.
