Description

Vision Express is an Optician in the UK. The eyewitness film shows historic events that a famous news reporter, Sir Trevor McDonald, has seen during his lifetime. All these historic moments - the Berlin Wall being demolished, civil war in Lebanon, eating Iguana with Manuel Noriega, Ronald Reagan’s US election campaign and Nelson Mandela being freed from jail - were events he witnessed as a journalist. The film ends in the present day, where Sir Trevor reflects on how you should value looking after your eyes so your vision lasts a lifetime.

Execution

Due to the nature of the eyewitness idea, it was essential to cast someone who had seen many interesting things in their life. We cast among famous explorers, politicians and journalists. Sir Trevor McDonald was chosen because he was an everyman loved by the nation, who had witnessed some of the most historical events on the planet over the past 30 years.

Outcome

As this was an eyewitness account, it was essential to the idea that everything Sir Trevor witnessed was real news footage, which he was actually present at. As such, the film was put together as a short documentary by a documentary film company. The director sifted through hours of old newsreel footage that Sir Trevor had witnessed as a reporter. Sir Trevor was then interviewed about the events, and the interview was used as the voiceover.
