OVERVIEW

Description

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines developed Fakeblok – a way journalists to report and vet fake news sites, and block them on people’s newsfeeds. The Fakeblok website takes submissions to be vetted by the union of journalists. The constantly-updated list then feeds into a Chrome plug-in that blocks fake news posts with a stop-and-think message from the NUJP. Turning the very media of fake news – the newsfeed – into a reality check.

Execution

Fakeblok was launched on the Chrome Store in January of 2017. We then introduced it to individual journalists and heads of media organizations, and posted about it on our Facebook page. We then relied on the close-knit journalist community to spread the word.

Outcome

Since January, Fakeblok has received 163 journalist-contributed fake news sites. More than 1,000 posts have been blocked. And more than 660,000 people have been prevented from seeing fake news. Fakeblok has been made open-source, so that journalist unions around the world can use it. Because fake news is everyone’s problem.
