Description

"First Customer" is the story of a kid's first day at work at his first job ever, and his training is interrupted by an unexpected first customer…his overly proud parents.

Execution

The casting was key to the success of this commercial. We needed four principals to tell a very simple story about a kid's first day of work at his first job ever.

For the lead role of Gabriel, we asked the casting agent to find Hispanic kids who had an innocent, likable quality to them. A kid next door who could appeal to all our Hispanic audiences.

As soon as we saw Oscar, we knew he was the one. He has a Michael Cera quality that was perfect for the role. Nervous, vulnerable, and sweet.

Once we had the role of Gabriel down, we began looking at the role of David, the manager. We needed an actor that had confidence, approachability, and was believable as a McDonald's manager.

The actor we chose, Fernando, not only had all those qualities, but also was physically much bigger and muscular than Oscar, which helped to visually reinforce the roles of trainer and trainee. A yin to Oscar's yang.

Mom and dad actually auditioned together during the first casting session. They quickly developed a chemistry that was evident in the callbacks. The improvisation they came up with blew everyone else away.

On the day of the shoot we experimented quite a bit with their performances, which took the comedy to another level.

Each actor brought something to the table that we hadn't anticipated while writing the spot, which resulted in rave reviews throughout the industry but, most importantly, recaptured the spirit of the brand.
