Description

Blind people can’t see social media. But they can hear it. That is why we created FotoOto – the first photo app that transforms pictures into sound images.

FotoOto provides blind people with a powerful tool to perceive content and get an emotional impression of images. It recognizes visual content, translates it into a text description and turns pictures into melodies.

For the first time ever, visual content is transformed into a new format that is equally usable for blind and sighted people.

Execution

For this, we united three key features that are most useful to blind people. The app provides an easy-to-use camera, recognizes visual content and translates images into melodies that give an emotional impression of a picture. With the touch of the button, the sound images can be shared across various platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Outcome

Until now, we have succeeded in reaching our target group by finding a technological solution to one of their greatest desires when it comes to social media. First tests with blind people resulted in euphoric feedback on the usability of FotoOto and we expect the app to become the standard photo app for blind and visually impaired people.

Furthermore, users on social media responded very positively to the app. FotoOto will also be presented to a larger audience during the important press and blogger event re:publica 2017 and a larger PR roll-out has begun.

The project not only expanded the technological competence of the development department of Publicis Pixelpark, but also created a completely new owned media platform with an addressable target group.
