Background

The Tribeca Film Festival is the largest film festival in New York. It has grown beyond film into a celebration of all types of storytelling including video games, virtual reality, music, television, talks and online works and the festival prides itself on showcasing the latest cutting-edge forms of storytelling.

This year TFF wanted to celebrate the anniversary of certain classic films. We focused our campaign on the following features.

Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 globally renowned, award-winning masterpiece, “Apocalypse Now.”

“This is Spinal Tap”, a cult classic that has achieved legendary status and helped launch the careers of Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest among others.

And the world’s favorite cartoon family “The Simpsons”, which after 29 years on television has fans from all ages in every corner of the world.

Execution

We took several pieces from the festival’s retrospective series including “Apocalypse Now”, with the help of PhD in Egyptology from Brown University, accurately translated them into hieroglyphics and created an art piece for each that told the entire story of the film/show in one linear piece. We accurately followed the ancient Egyptian canon of proportions for human figures and since they didn’t work with depth, we adapted every scene to a single plane in the iconic style of frontalism. We also developed specialized color palettes based on the same six colours ancient Egyptian used.

We also created entirely new hieroglyphs of our own that let us tell these more modern stories without straying from the 5,000-year-old technique. Ultimately the campaign gave people a chance to experience their favorite stories like never before.
