The look of the film was designed to evoke
a gentle sense of nostalgia associated
with early childhood, with a softly muted
colour palette and long shadows that
could transition into the darkness and
desolation of the final scene, when the
light from the boy’s heart is finally lost. The
organic textures and painterly approach
added to that, with the imperfections
inherent in 1400+ hand painted frames
imbuing the film with a sense of naivete
and childlike appeal. The swirling
transitions tied everything together, as
they broke apart and reformed the boy’s
world in an endless loop that cannot be
stopped or slowed down, no matter how
much the mother wants to.
