Description

The SalonLab Analyzer is designed to fit organically and unobtrusively into the flow of a beauty consultation while introducing new technical capabilities. Compact in size, the SalonLab Analyzer is designed for quick accessibility. Hairdressers can easily carry it on their styling apron, or keep it docked on their work station.

The SalonLab Customizer stands alone in the salon and performs a deceptively simple task. Controls are similarly simple and reduced to a single button for ease of use. An elegant and sleek design; every element of the device is purposeful, working in concert to bridge the realms of science and style; culminating with a custom, personalized mixture dispensed at point-of-service.

At the core of these two technological innovations, stands the SalonLab Consultant App, which serves as the hub for the SalonLab experience, ensuring the interaction between the devices, stylist, and consumer is as seamless and effortless as possible.

Execution

The SalonLab ecosystem includes two award-winning devices, the Analyzer and Customizer, supported by the Consultant App. The first step is a hair diagnosis using the Analyzer, a wireless device that provides hair analysis on the molecular level by reading and evaluating the reflection of infrared light signals. The device uses customized sensors and specialized light sources to assess inner hair quality and hair color. The output of the device readings are analyzed by a proprietary algorithm, resulting in an individual hair care recipe.

The recipe is sent to the Customizer which is engineered to make custom hair care products with the touch of a button. It is designed to dynamically formulate and precisely dispense high-viscosity, liquid beauty care products on-demand at the point-of-service. It provides a powerful service, yet comes with a limited number of components for effortless implementation at any salon. It features a unique, stainless steel mixing head, precision peristaltic pumps and custom controller electronics. Hundreds of different combinations of hair solutions, colors and fragrances can be mixed on the spot and dispensed in salon-sized portions or small bottles with a personalized label printed directly from the SalonLab Customizer, for consumers to take home and re-order online.

Outcome

The CES SalonLab showcase and the positive halo effect created by winning two CES Innovation Awards and “Best of CES” recognition from USA Today’s Reviewed.com, Techlicious and VentureBeat, along with garnering positive press coverage overall, has had a huge impact both internally, as well as with the stylist community.  Stylists are excited about new innovations that are expected to create positive impact on their business, and Henkel is inspired to look for additional innovations internally, in order to continue to drive digital innovation and added value.  SalonLab is a great example of how to leverage knowledge and expertise from the lab and apply it in a consumer-friendly and easy-to-use format, in order to drive further growth and ensure relevance in an ever-increasing digital and fast-paced environment.  Demand for the ecosystem is high; and plans are in place to get the product into key markets in the near future
