Background

The brief and the intention of the film was to make the viewer believe they were watching a celebration of England’s World Cup campaign, which was then turned and twisted narratively on the final house the camera settles on.

The campaign reassures these women that they are not alone and reminds us that, if we can all come together as a nation to support a football team, we can also come together to tackle domestic abuse.

Execution

We felt a specific genre of music was leading the viewer too much, and with a pure sound design approach with some chordal dronal elements it lacked that euphoric World Cup atmosphere.

There was no budget for sound or music, therefore we sourced royalty free music elements and manipulated them to help carry the emotion but not be too obvious.

We found instruments which had the right frequencies (guitars, some drums & keys) playing in a major key and then granularly stretched them by a huge amount, to create new unrecognisable sounds with no identifiable orchestration.

We selected elements and arranged them to create a sense of progression through the film. We laid this under the sound bed of the ‘commentator’ narrative that hopefully draws the viewer down an avenue which gets turned on its head when the sound warps into a minor key and bends unnaturally at the end.
