Description

IKEA Place lets you confidently experience, experiment and share how good design transforms your space. It enables you to place 3D, true-to-scale furniture directly into the living room, dining room, office or whichever space you wish to make your own. All with the help of the latest augmented reality technology.

IKEA Place is rooted in IKEA's democratic design approach and the goal of making a better everyday life for the many people. Enabling them to virtually place furniture in their own spaces, IKEA Place helps unleash their imagination around home furnishing. It also enables IKEA to “open” millions of new showrooms globally through people’s smartphones—bringing IKEA closer to people and people closer to IKEA.

Execution

In July 2017, we started working on IKEA Place with two months to meet the launch deadline. When it came to furniture, we didn’t want to take people out of their place entirely; so we designed the product drawer as an overlay—keeping a sliver of the actual place visible at all times. The furniture is displayed with 98 percent accuracy - no more pinch and zoom - and gives people a true sense of texture thanks to our 3D models. And based on how we’d use real furniture, you can ‘pick up’ products in IKEA Place and swipe through as they hover above the floor. When you place a product on the floor with a tap, everything disappears from the screen. Suddenly, it’s just the product in your place and the imagination gap closes.

In September 2017, we launched IKEA Place. Next came a version for Android in March 2018 alongside a visual search function: you can take a photo of any item and the app will match it to the closest IKEA products. In mid-April, we added Magic Flatpack—a function where you can ‘step in’ to a virtual wardrobe and explore a warehouse environment, all from your phone.

Outcome

To date, IKEA Place has garnered 2.2 million downloads from the App Store and has an average rating of 4.7; plus, Apple voted it the best non-gaming AR app of 2017. People have virtually placed products within the app over 9 million times, and we have over 4000 products available in augmented reality.
