OVERVIEW

Description

In Japan, sports day is a popular annual event at schools all around the country. While children compete hard in various team events, their parents work equally hard recording their precious children’s efforts on video camera. It’s not too much to say that some parents go to crazy lengths to shoot their kids’ performances. In our TV commercial for a new Canon video camera, we parodied the adoring, camera-crazy Dad on sports day. To emphasize the camera’s power to capture memorable performances, we cast a hugely popular child actress as the main character. As the events of sports day progress, the child’s father grows increasingly excited and starts calling out ever more forceful “performance” instructions to his daughter, sounding more and more like a manic Hollywood director. In the penultimate scene, the daughter gazes skyward, stunned to see her father rising high above the playground on a crane yelling for her to continue her performance. The payoff says that the Canon camera will give “the Hollywood Dad” a sense of movie-making mastery, which unfortunately adds another challenge to the life of a child.
