Idea

José Mourinho joined the RT team for special coverage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, sharing his expert analysis and predictions for the tournament.

Strategy

For the 2018 World Cup in Russia, we assembled a top-flight team to give our coverage the edge. Jose Mourinho became our star player – and propelled our programming to success. We kicked off the World Cup with a slick promo showing Russia’s national achievements and telling the stories of the players who’ve been inducted into the national Hall of Fame. We also ran the promo at our airport stands throughout the tournament.Prior to the group stages, we made a three-part video giving Jose Mourinho’s predictions.They turned out to be pretty inaccurate, but racked up millions of views online.

Execution

Overall we gained millions of views and widespread media attention by making Jose our top commentator and expert for the World Cup coverage.

Outcome

Mourinho’s 2018 collaboration with RT generated a media firestorm, with hundreds of outlets from Brazil to India writing about the partnership. His subsequent predictions of the tournament, from the Group Stage all the way to the finals, went viral, generating millions of views.
