Overview

Background

Pathologists. The purpose of the film is to encourage pathologists to look beyond the binary approach to breast cancer diagnostics and change the way they classify HER2, giving as many people as possible access to the care.

Execution

The film is founded in pathological practice and demonstrates the profound impact that the simplistic categorisation of HER2 breast cancer has on the lives of patients. When characters press negative buttons, symbolic of pathologist binary decision making, they are cast into a dark and isolated psychological environment. The animation showcases the story of emotions, the isolation and distress when women receive a HER2 negative diagnosis, and then, their relief and hope when they are given an alternate classification and the possibility of targeted treatments.

The animation takes place inside a building designed to look familiar to pathologists, using architectural details of slide holders. The slides act as windows into patients’ lives: a visual metaphor to remind pathologists of the true impact of their diagnosis.
