Background

Today most people catch up on current events online. Instead of discovering the story behind a headline we intend to only browse through the texts and content ourselves with very little background information. “Der Tagesspiegel” is a newspaper from Berlin that provides a wide range of columns. With a small budget they wanted to communicate the ongoing relevance of print newspapers in 2016. Our objective was to show that by asking the right questions, high-quality journalism can still have a view-changing effect on the reader.

Description

A few days before the US elections “Der Tagesspiegel” published an issue showing candidate Donald Trump on the cover. We used the picture to generate an animated Gif. The animation showed a growing newspaper stack. The stack was placed on a single unfolded cover page that showed the lover part of Trumps face. Seen from a certain angle, the picture was completed and – while the stack was growing – the opened mouth of Trump got more and more distorted. The result was a surreal, exaggerated version of the original cover picture which we combined with the headline “Donald Trump. Will he bully his way into the white house?” and the announcement of a news special about the US-election.

Execution

We stacked newspapers on a single unfolded cover page that showed the lover half of the cover picture. Seen from a certain angle, the picture got distorted and added a new layer of meaning to the topic: It expressed expectations and fears associated with the item and made people even more curious about the announced news special.
