Description

Press freedom is literally under attack.

In 2011, 66 journalists were killed, 1959 physically attacked, 1011 imprisoned. People are not aware how much blood it takes to inform them.

We asked 6 Belgian war reporters to write down their experience in conflict zones as a tribute to their colleagues killed in action. Written with their own blood, as a statement.

Execution

6 Belgian war correspondents wrote down a statement, drawn with their own blood. With these statements, they contacted their superiors and media relations in order to gain publicity for the cause of RWB which led to high media exposure.

Outcome

The whole campaign reached nearly 2 of the 10 million Belgians.

War reporters were interviewed on national radio and in the prime news of 2 TV stations.

National public television VRT dedicated a 15 minute special to the matter during its talkshow Reyers Laat.

On May 3, World Press Freedom Day was that day’s most widely covered media topic. The website had 2857 visits, 20 times more than before.

All the media space and print production costs were offered by the media. Hence over 95% of the total campaign cost was granted for free. Which represents about 10x the annual budget of RWB.
