Description

The key objective was to design a cover that used the Olympic colours but did not include the official logo or the rings. It needed to reference the theme and stand out from other magazines.

Execution

Rather than use traditional imagery of Japan or the Olympics, we wanted to create something a little different.

Coincidentally, it was mentioned in the cult anime film Akira (1988), that the 2020 Olympics were to be hosted by Neo-Tokyo.

Taking inspiration from traditional Japanese animation techniques, this illustration is an expression of the energy and dynamism of the Olympics, and also captures the flavour of modern Japan. We wanted to show that the Tokyo Olympics will be a truly unique event in true Japanese style.

Outcome

The monthly magazine “BRAIN” is the most popular Japanese magazine among those who are interested in creative works/ people/ skill, especially in the advertising world. For the most part, the magazine focuses on design, copywriting, commercial filming and interactive communication of advertising.
