Background

More people are looking for love on dating apps than ever before, yet less than 1% of matches turn into dates. In a sea of 'Sup?'s and shirtless pics, we wanted to give young people the means to have authentic conversations on Tinder. Because authenticity leads to dates, which leads to people buying Orbit gum.

Idea

We created a digital assistant for your dating life and turned a Tinder ad into one of the most popular profiles on the platform. Meet Wingbot, a friendly AI that uses real data from Tinder to offer personalized advice to users. Covering everything from openers to first date ideas, people could ask Wingbot for help within their Tinder direct messages.

Strategy

Nearly half of all people meet on dating apps, with Tinder being the most popular dating platform. However, to help singles truly date better and with more confidence, we needed to speak the language of the platform while remaining true to our brand. We partnered with Tinder to compile comprehensive data on modern dating and discovered ways to help people through every part of the conversation - from opening lines to asking someone out for a first date.

We developed a friendly AI that could offer advice based on real Tinder data that could help people have better conversations without leaving the app. It wasn’t enough to just provide people under 25 with information -- we had to add humor, intrigue, and a healthy dose of gifs to ensure that conversations with Wingbot felt native to the platform.

Execution

We hijacked a Tinder ad and turned it into an AI assistant for your dating life. Meet Wingbot, a friendly bot that uses real data from Tinder to offer personalized dating advice to users. People interacted directly, swiping right on Wingbot to get advice on everything from openers to first date ideas. Not only did users match with our ad, they kept coming back for more.

Outcome

In a place where brands don’t get a lot of right swipes, Wingbot set a new standard for engagement inside Tinder -- not just for an ad, but even between people!

Wingbot was a hit with Tinder users who spent an average of 1.5 minutes per session with the AI (vs. the 40 sec industry average). The average user exchanged 10.2 messages and 11.3% of all users clicked through to claim a pack of Orbit gum for their first date.

The campaign achieved a strong Message Open Rate (starting the dialogue with the chatbot) of 92.4%, 42% over the benchmark.

With Wingbot, Orbit showed that the best kind of social media is one that gives people confidence to be more social offline.
