Description

Time for Decisions – The Soap of your Choice is an interactive soap opera for young people to experience how political decisions can influence their life. Therefore, election programmes became scripted entertainment: Storylines feature topics like cannabis legalisation, gay marriages, minimum wage, double citizenships or the war in Afghanistan. The storylines follow strictly the argumentation of the official election programmes of the five parties represented in the German Parliament. At the end of each episode, viewers are asked to vote for a party, to watch one of five endings. The endings differ significantly according to the position of the parties. Based on the assumption, that each party can realise its election programme completely. Playing with the clichés of soap operas, the cast includes all types of celebrities for instance, a soccer star, a TV judge, models and many more. The stage of the story is a café called Terzio.

Execution

The soap opera ran on different news portals on the Internet (Spiegel, Bild) a popular social network for pupils and students (StudiVZ, SchülerVZ) and the music television channel VIVA. The four episodes had an approximately length of 15 minutes plus the five different endings.Each of the four episodes was announced with print ads in newspapers. In the four weeks before the general election users experiences seventeen different political topics.

Outcome

Time for decisions ran in the four weeks before the general election 2009. More than 1.000.000 viewers followed the four episodes. On social networks sites users discussed the different endings intensively. The soap opera became a press topic in Germany and abroad.
